Salinas BWA News for October 2015


On September 12, twenty ladies enjoyed a bus trip to Table Mountain.  They all had a good time, but apparently there were no big winners.  Thank you to Tamiko Oishi and Fumi Urabe for chairing this event.

The Coast District Council meeting was held in Salinas on September 16.  Toban Group 2 was in charge of preparing dinner for the attendees.  Thank you to the following ladies who helped prepare and serve the dinner.  Sachi Kawahira, Misako Kamimura, Kazue Kuramura, Yoneko Inoue, Tomiko Kamimura, Ekiko Yonemitsu, Kazuko Yonemitsu, Linda Iwamoto, Kay Morishita, Cynthia Tsukamoto, Tamiko Oishi, Minako Fujikawa and June Aoki..

Salinas Buddhist Women’s Association Update


We were saddened to lose one of our BWA members Marti Wakayama in July. Our heartfelt condolences to Benny, Laura and Andi and their families.

We would like to thank all the BWA members who worked so diligently on the 2015 Obon and recognize the chairpersons: Fumiko Onitsuka, Tomiko Kamimura, Fukiko Nishio, Misako Kamimura, Yoriko Kuramura, Mitsuko Hagihara, Kazue Kuramura, Fumiko Yonemitsu, Kahori Kuramura, Kiyoko Uchida, Lillian Kawahira, Noriko Uchida, Noriko Yamaguchi, Bonnie Yokota, Kay Morishita, Kayoko Kyutoku, Makiko Kurano, Kimi Yoshimura, Kumi Tashiro, Tomi Matsuno, June Aoki, Irene Yonemitsu, Tamiko Oishi, Carol Cisneros.

On September 12, 2015, twenty-two BWA members will be taking a bus trip to Table Mountain Casino. BWA will be paying for the bus fee for those attending. Thank you to Fumi Urabe and Tamiko Oishi for making all the arrangements.

On September 16, 2015 there will be a CD Council meeting in Salinas. Our Toban group 2 will be in charge of preparing dinner.

On September 20, 2015, we will be having our first BWA senior lunch and social for our members from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Our activity for this event will be BINGO. All members are welcome to the luncheon and social. Please RSVP to your telephone chair or to Kahori.

We would appreciate any baked goods or monetary donations for the Temple Tri-tip sales on Sunday September 27.

9 12 日に婦人会親睦会としてテーブルマウンテンカジノに 22 名で行く予定です。バス代は婦人会で負担い たします。浦部フミさんと大石民子さんが準備してくださいました。有難うございます。

9 16 日はサリナスでの沿岸教区カウンセル会議です。お茶当番グループ 2 が夕食の準備です。

9 20 日は(日)午前 11 時より午後 1 時まで婦人会親睦と敬老を兼ねた昼食会です。午前 11 時より親睦会、 12 時から 1 時まで昼食です。親睦会はビンゴを予定しています。婦人会の皆さん是非参加してください。出席 の返事は電話のチェアーか倉村かほりまでしてください。必要な方は送迎もしますのでお申し出ください。

9 27 日(日)仏教会トライチップ・バーべキューセールです。ケーキ類も即売されますので皆さんケーキ、 パイ、クッキー、まんじゅう等をお持ち下さるかご寄附をお願いいたします。


Salinas BWA August News


            Our first BWA Senior lunch honoring our seniors will be held Sunday, September 20 from 11am to 1pm. We will have an activity or activities from 11:00am to 12:00pm and then have lunch from 12:00pm. (Lunch is provided by BWA).

            Our seniors will be our guests to come, visit and have lunch. If anyone needs transportation, a driver will be at your service. This lunch is open to all BWA members.

We will also need volunteers from the younger members to help prepare lunch and be

drivers. We have a committee who will work on the activity and lunch menu.

            We will have our phone committee call all our members in August to see how many will attend, who will need a ride etc.

            Please mark your calendars for September 20 and join us for our first Senior Lunch and Social.




On June 28 we made lumpia for the Obon.  Many of the Temple women came out to help.  Chairpersons were Mitsuko Hagihara, Fumiko Yonemitsu and Kazue Kuramura.  Thank you for your leadership and thank you to all the members who came to help make the lumpia.

On July 9, a few of the BWA members made Anpan for the Obon under the leadership of Kay Morishita. Thank you to the ladies who helped.

The Temple purchased a new refrigerator for the kitchen.  Salinas BWA donated $1,500 toward the cost of the refrigerator.

We would like to thank all those who came out to make kuri manju on July 18 and 19.  Thank you to chairpersons Fukiko Nishio, Misako Kamimura and Yoriko Kuramura.

On August 9 there will be a Furutani service and lecture.  All BWA members are urged to attend. Guest speaker will be Rev. Arai. After a catered lunch, Rev. Arai will have a special lecture.

On September 20, we are planning to have a BWA Senior Lunch. See article in newsletter.

July 2015

      On Friday, May 22, many BWA members went to Tashiro greenhouse to bunch flowers for Yamato Cemetery Memorial day services. Tamiko Oishi arranged for the flower donations and arranged for the volunteers. Thank you to: Tomiko Kamimura, Lillian Kawahira, Makiko Kurano, Kahori Kuramura, Kumi Tashiro, Kiyoko Uchida, Atsuko Yamaguchi, Ekiko Yonemitsu, Irene Yonemitsu, Kazuko Yonemitsu and Carol Cisneros

         We had another successful BWA Food Sale on Sunday, June 7. Thank you to all the chair people and members who worked so hard to make all the sushi and pastries, order all the vegetables for sale , marinate and barbeque the delicious teriyaki chicken.

We thank the wonderful barbeque crew and chair, Herb Wong for getting up in the

middle of the night to cook the chicken: Mark Amiya, Andrew Eitoku, Jimmy Eitoku, Robert Gatanaga, Larry Hirahara, John Hirasuna, John Shioya, Alan Takemura, Neil Uota, Richard Uto, Mark Yamaguchi, Ron Yokota and Geoffrey Yonemitsu. Thank you to the other men who helped on Friday and Sunday: Isao Eitoku, Tsugu Kuramura, Neil Miyazaki, Gene Tsukamoto, Henry Uchida, Kenji Yonemitsu and Rev. Fujikawa. Thank you Kenji for storing the marinating chicken and then transporting it back to the Temple

            Our annual Lady Kujo Memorial service was held on June 14. Thank you for all the generous donations that will be earmarked for the youth of our Temple, Dharma School and YBA. All the proceeds will go to supporting the future of our Temple.

            Obon (July 26) will soon be here and we are busy preparing all the foods that will be

sold.  When you get the Obon schedule, please read the dates and times when your help will needed and come join us in the preparations. Be sure to read the Booth schedule for July 26 and if you cannot work your shift, please notify the booth chair or Carol so we can make the appropriate changes and make sure our booths are adequately staffed.

            Our BWA voted to donate $1,500.00 towards the purchase of the new Temple kitchen refrigerator.

            The CDBWL Cabinet (Salinas BWA) has chosen the theme:  "Live a Peaceful Life"

for the March 12, 2016 CDBWL Conference to be held in Salinas. Sensei has confirmed that

Rev. Yoshiko Miyaji of Gardena Buddhist Temple will be the guest speaker. Please mark your calendars and save that date for our CDBWL Conference.

            Salinas BWA will be helping with the CD Nembutsu Family Conference to be held at

the Monterey Peninsula Buddhist Temple on October 25, 2015.

        Thank you to all the BWA members who came and helped at the annual Asian Festival on April 25:  June Aoki, Carol Cisneros, Chieko Eitoku, Yoneko Inoue, Tomiko Kamimura,  Yasuyo Kikuchi, Kahori Kuramura, Kazue Kuramura, Yoshiko Kuramura, Makiko Kurano, Kayoko Kyutoku, Tamiko Oishi, Katsuyo Shinhira, Cynthia Tsukamoto, Kiyoko Uchida, Noriko Uchida, Atsuko Yamaguchi,  Helen Yamashita, Bonnie Yokota, Sachiko Yokota, Irene Yonemitsu, Kazuko Yonemitsu, Ekiko Yonemitsu, Fumiko Yonemitsu, Kimi Yoshimura and BTS members: Mitsuko Gatanaga, Nancy Gilbert, Judy Ishizue, Atsuko Minami, Machiko Miyanaga.

         We did not have a very good turn out due to the rainy and cold weather. We hope that the weather will be nice at next year's Asian Festival and do better sales on the food and artifact sales.

         Due to our heavy schedule for the next few months, we  are planning on having the first BWA

senior lunch in September. We will have more information in our next newsletter.          

      Remember June 7, our annual BWA Food Sale. You can purchase tickets from any BWA

member or call Carol for tickets and information. Please pick up your orders 11am-1pm. We

will have vegetable and pastry sales too.
