Temple President's Message for June 2017

To the Temple members of the Buddhist Temple of Salinas,

With great work done by Davis Onitsuka, Melvin Aoki and Alicia Uchida, Salinas Buddhist Temple have a house in escrow for a new minister’s resident on the South side of Salinas. If everything go well Rev. Fujita can move to the new resident in mid-June. Since the housing market has gotten better the Temple needed to exceed the original budget for the new resident but the board felt it was worth it for it is in a great neighborhood in south Salinas next to an elementary school and the hospital.

During the last month, we had First Alarm upgrade both the Temple and the Temple residence security system.  The Temple need to thank Don Yoshimura and Davis Onitsuka for installation of cameras and lights for the Temple residence and making the residence more secure.  Also during this last month Robert Gatanaga installed new dead bolts for the entire Temple residence doors which will make it hard for an intruder to break-in.  So again, a big thank you to people who volunteered their time to work on these Temple projects and make the minister residence more secure until we can complete the purchase of the new residence for Rev. Fujita.

For the month of June, Temple events include the BWA food sale on Sunday, June 4th starting at 11 AM. Our major service for the month is the Lady Takeko Kujo BWA Memorial Service on June 11th, which is also the last day of Dharma school for the Dharma students. Also mark your calendar on Sunday June 25th we are having our biannual Temple cleanup starting at 8:00 AM.

Temple President's May 2017 Message

To the Temple members of the Buddhist Temple of Salinas,

We had a very successful Tri-Temple Hanamatsuri Service on April 9th at Monterey Peninsula Buddhist Temple. About 175 to 180 people from Watsonville, Salinas, and Monterey temples attended the service and had a delicious luncheon after the service.  On Saturday night before the service, eight people from Salinas attended a dinner at Crab House on the Old Fisherman’s Wharf.  After the dinner there was a Dharma talk by Reverend Kuwahara at the Monterey Temple, which was well attended. Our next Tri-Temple service will be the Gotan-e (ごうたんえ 降誕会, Shinran Shonin’s birthday) service on May 21th at Watsonville Buddhist Temple. Reverend Yuki Sugihara will be the guest speaker and Watsonville is also planning a Dharma talk on Saturday afternoon, so please put these events on your calendar.

Our Temple will be having our Shotsuki Service for May on May 7th. We will also be having our Annual Temple picnic on the same day after the service so please plan to attend this event.

In the coming months the Temple will be preparing for our annual Obon Festival on July 30th. I am fortunate to have Jimmy Eitoku and Don Yoshimura co-chair this year’s event.  So please help them out if you are asked, since some of our older members are increasingly unable to do the work that they had done in the past.

Our Temple is also hosting this year’s Coast District Nembutsu conference on October 29th.  I will chair the event and will be starting a committee for the event. I am looking for volunteers to help with the event so please email or call me if you are willing to help. I am hoping to have a committee of eight to ten people to put on this event. I will be also calling people next month to see if they can help with this event.

Temple President's April 2017 Message

To Temple members and friends of the Temple

Since my last newsletter in February, Reverend Fujita, Larry Hirahara and I attended the National Council Meeting in San Jose from March 2 to March 5th. The big news which we voted on during the meeting was passing a $133.31 per member assessment rate which is a $19 increase over our assessment rate of $114 of last year. After talking to the Temple board of directors, we voted for this year Salinas Temple due assessment to increased to $225 for singles and $450 for couples. This will be a $25 per person increase in assessment vs. last year dues. This will be the first increase in the dues since 2007, I feel going to the National Council meeting that cost are raising at the national organization and we can see more increases in the upcoming years unfortunately.

On another unfortunate event, during last month BWA monthly meeting on a Wednesday night a shooting happen on Soledad Street that left four peoples going to the hospital. This event made the BWA ladies uncomfortable having the meetings at night and they have decided to move the meetings to Sunday afternoon which they feel would be a safer time of day. Reverend Fujita, who was also at the meeting and who has have peoples pounding his resident door in the middle of the night, decided it is not safe at the temple resident and has move to a resident house behind Alan Takemura’s house. The Temple need to thanks Alan and his wife for letting Sensei Fujita temporary stay at the guest house. The Temple board is actively looking into finding a new resident for the sensei to stay in. We are also working on the minister’s resident on the Temple ground to make it more secure and hope to make it into a rental in the future.

Next month, the Tri-Temples of Monterey, Watsonville and Salinas are having Hanamatsuri service on April 9th, Sunday at 10:00 AM at the Monterey Buddhist Temple. If someone would like a ride to Monterey, we will be having carpooling from the Salinas Buddhist Temple leaving at 9 AM. Rev. Kiyonobu Kuwahara, co-director of the BCA Center for Buddhist Education will be the guest speaker for Hanamatsuri service. After the service we will be having a luncheon at the Monterey temple so please try to make this important service.

Temple President's March 2017 Message

Hello Salinas Buddhist Temple Members, this is this month’s updates from your Temple President. I am looking forward to attending the annual National Council Meeting in San Jose at the end of this month. Larry Hirahara, Reverend Fujita and I will be representing the Temple and we have the voting right for our Temple for the issues that come up for votes during the National Council Meeting. I will report back in next month’s newsletter on the items that the Council voted on during the meeting. The chairman of the National Council meeting would like to invite Salinas Temple members to the annual banquet, which will be held on Saturday night on March 4th at Marriott Hotel in San Jose. Tickets are $100 per seat, please email or call me if anyone would like to attend the event. Also on Sunday March 5th at 10 AM, the National Council meeting is having Eitakiyo Service at the San Jose Buddhist Temple Betsuin.

Other important news is that we will be having Tri Temple services and luncheon after the service. The first one will be the Hanamatsuri Service on April 9th at the Monterey Buddhist Temple at 10 AM. On May 20th the Goutanye Service will be held at Watsonville Buddhist Temple. Finally on August 20th we will be hosting the Shonin Memorial Service with Dr. Ken Tanaka as our guest speaker. Members of the Temple will be offering car pool services for people who feel that they can’t drive to Monterey or Watsonville for the two out of town service.  Please plan to attend these three services, as each service will have great guest speakers. It will be especially good if Dharma School kids can attend, because they will be treated to a special “Dharma Talk” for the kids.

If any Temple members have good ideas on how to make the Temple better, please let me know so that we can talk about them at the Temple board of directors meetings.

Temple President's February 2017 Message

Dear Temple members,

Happy New Year everyone! I, Gary Tanimura, am your president for the Buddhist Temple of Salinas for 2017. First I would like to give a very big thank you from the Buddhist Temple of Salinas to Jimmy Eitoku, who has been president during the past three years. Through his efforts and the efforts of our past presidents, Melvin Aoki and Gary Omori, we now have a young, energetic, willing-to-learn resident minister, Rev. Yugo Fujita. I would also like to thank Carol Cisneros and Mariko Yamashita, who are leaving the board for 2017 after many years of service on the board. Mariko has agreed to continue as recording secretary. I’d like to let the membership know that we have Tsugu Kuramura returning to the board, and we also have three new board members, Alan Takemura, Glenn Minami and Neil Uota serving for 2017-2019.

This month the Temple had its January Hoonko Service and New Year Party on Sunday, January 15th. We were fortunate to have Rev. Kiyonobu Kuwahara the co-Director of the BCA Center for Buddhist Education as our guest speaker. We had a nice luncheon and installation of the board of the directors of the Buddhist Temple, BWA and YBA after the meal. Please join us in February for the Nirvana Day Service on Sunday, February 12th. I’d also like to invite the membership to the Temple annual meeting, which I am having on Monday, February 13th at 6 PM at the boardroom at the Buddhist Temple of Salinas.

On being your president for this year, please email me with any ideas on how I can make the Temple better, especially about how we can grow our membership at the Temple. It was a topic that we discussed at the last Tri-Temple (Monterey-Salinas-Watsonville) meeting in Monterey. Rev. Jay plans to talk about this at the next Tri Temple meeting in Salinas in April. So please email me at
