Temple President's April 2017 Message

To Temple members and friends of the Temple

Since my last newsletter in February, Reverend Fujita, Larry Hirahara and I attended the National Council Meeting in San Jose from March 2 to March 5th. The big news which we voted on during the meeting was passing a $133.31 per member assessment rate which is a $19 increase over our assessment rate of $114 of last year. After talking to the Temple board of directors, we voted for this year Salinas Temple due assessment to increased to $225 for singles and $450 for couples. This will be a $25 per person increase in assessment vs. last year dues. This will be the first increase in the dues since 2007, I feel going to the National Council meeting that cost are raising at the national organization and we can see more increases in the upcoming years unfortunately.

On another unfortunate event, during last month BWA monthly meeting on a Wednesday night a shooting happen on Soledad Street that left four peoples going to the hospital. This event made the BWA ladies uncomfortable having the meetings at night and they have decided to move the meetings to Sunday afternoon which they feel would be a safer time of day. Reverend Fujita, who was also at the meeting and who has have peoples pounding his resident door in the middle of the night, decided it is not safe at the temple resident and has move to a resident house behind Alan Takemura’s house. The Temple need to thanks Alan and his wife for letting Sensei Fujita temporary stay at the guest house. The Temple board is actively looking into finding a new resident for the sensei to stay in. We are also working on the minister’s resident on the Temple ground to make it more secure and hope to make it into a rental in the future.

Next month, the Tri-Temples of Monterey, Watsonville and Salinas are having Hanamatsuri service on April 9th, Sunday at 10:00 AM at the Monterey Buddhist Temple. If someone would like a ride to Monterey, we will be having carpooling from the Salinas Buddhist Temple leaving at 9 AM. Rev. Kiyonobu Kuwahara, co-director of the BCA Center for Buddhist Education will be the guest speaker for Hanamatsuri service. After the service we will be having a luncheon at the Monterey temple so please try to make this important service.
